Titanic Research Project

For this assessment, I chose the Titanic as my research project because of all the mysteries and theories surrounding it. The Titanic was a luxurious cruise ship that sailed from England to New York City in 1912. Many people were on board for immigration, business or leisure. At 11:40 pm on 14 April 1912, the ship struck an iceberg in the North Atlantic. Eventually, more than 1,500 people died, with only 706 survivors. It remains one of the deadliest peacetime maritime disasters in history.

Day and Night

For this assessment, we are learning how time moves by studying day and night. One side of Earth faces the Sun, causing daytime to occur there. The other side faces the Moon, resulting in night time. The Earth rotates around its own axis, which also makes the planet rotate. It takes about 24 hours for our Earth to make a full spin, which is about a day for daytime and night time to take turns.

Hourglass, Sundial and Clepsydra

For this assessment, we are researching information about the hourglass, sundial and clepsydra. An hourglass is a tool that measures time using sand that flows from one glass part to another. With two glass bulbs (top and bottom) connected by a tiny hole in the middle. A sundial is a circular plate which has a triangular gnomon. It tells the time by observing the shadow. Lastly, the clepsydra has two bowls and water leaks from the hole at the bottom to the bottom bowl. The water level indicates the time.

AI Movie

LI: To use our knowledge about dinosaurs in creative ways.

For this assessment, we have used Al Film to generate three videos of Stegosaurus in their natural habitat behaving in a natural way. Stegosaurus was a creature that lived in North America during the late Jurassic period. It was found in an environment characterized by forest floodplains and swamps.

Trip to Auckland War Memorial Museum

We visited the museum to review the topic of Volcanoes last week. Something  that I find it interesting was that the obsidian, which is actually a soft rock, has been used for sharp cutting tools. Our challenge was to make an insightful decision within a limited 30-second timeline. Our team had selecting all the items except for the cat.

Paired Research About Stegosaurus

LI: to research questions about your dinosaur including their habitat, diet, predators, and protection.

For this assessment, we are creating a presentation about the Stegosaurus, which is well-known for its triangular plates on it’s back. It’s notable that Stegosaurus ate rocks to help the stomach digestion.

50 Word Summary About Paleontologists

For this assessment, we are create a 50-word summary about paleontologists. A paleontologist is a scientist who studies fossils and traces of ancient life on Earth. It provides a clear understanding of the changes that have transpired over time. Field methods, geology, and stratigraphy are used to infer the location of fossils.

Mary Anning

LI: To create a DLO that tells Mary Annings story from her perspective story.

For this assessment, we are researching Mary Anning. She was born in 1799 in Lyme Regis, Dorset, England, and passed away at the age of 47. The burial took place at St. Michael’s Church. She gained recognition for her discovery of the complete skeleton of a Plesiosaurus (Mesozoic marine reptiles). Interesting fact , she was struck by lightning at the age of 15 months while being held under a tree by the nurse.

Different Types of Fossils

LI: To understand how scientists know so much about dinosaurs.

LI: To Recognised different types of fossils and how they are formed.

For this assessment, we are researching different types of fossils. Cast fossils and Trace fossils are the main types of fossils that can be discovered. Petrified fossils are the fossils that where the original organic material has been replaced by minerals, effectively turning the fossil into stone. Did you know that the oldest fossil are 3.5 billion years old.  It’s an rock formations called stromatolites.

Impact of Volcanoes

LI: To discuss the impact of volcanoes on the environment and human communities.

For this assessment we are researching information about the Whakaari White Island. My colleague and I selected Whakaari as a subject for discussion and research because we both found it to be an interesting topic.

Something I found interesting was that you can still visit the island by buying a scenic flight. (Which you could only see by booking a flight in a helicopter and taking a look from on top of the sky.)
